Junior school shoes at Mathers are leather shoes with adjustable straps, lace-ups, flats and Mary Janes from Colorado and ROC, sized for primary school students. Young feet grow quickly, so a size check each term helps, and our Mary Jane school shoes add strap styles for younger students.

Students who are still learning to tie laces do well in an adjustable fastening. Colorado Hybrid has a hook and loop strap, and Colorado Demo, Roar Junior, Hype and Tempo come in adjustable versions. Colorado Molly is a leather Mary Jane, and Colorado Luna, Ellie, Erina and Kiara are black leather flats.
Once students can tie their own laces, Colorado Demo Lace, Memo and Hiace and ROC Larrikin Junior are leather lace-ups. ROC Rapp Junior and Roar Junior also come in brown leather for schools with a brown uniform.
Younger feet grow quickly and unevenly, so measure before each term rather than buying by age or going up one size from last year. Leave about a centimetre in front of the longest toe, and take out the insole to check it against the foot. New leather that feels firm after a summer in sandals softens within the first weeks of term. When it is time for high school, our senior school shoes cover the next step up.
A: A leather shoe with an adjustable strap suits most younger students, as it goes on quickly and holds the foot firmly. Colorado Hybrid, Demo Adjustable and Roar Junior are reliable choices.
Â
A: Before each term. Younger feet grow unevenly, so a pair that fitted at the start of the year may not fit later on.
Â
A: No. A shoe that is too big lets the heel slip, which rubs and wears the shoe out faster. About a centimetre of growing room is enough.

A: Some schools require full grain leather. Even where it is optional, leather breathes, polishes back after scuffs and usually outlasts synthetic materials.
